About Me

thumbnail_IMG_5088.jpg

Hello, I’m Dominique, a compassionate and experienced qualified counsellor and psychotherapist based in Manchester. I have a postgraduate diploma in counselling and psychotherapy from the University of Salford. I am dedicated to providing a safe and supportive space where children and young people can explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. As a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), I adhere to their ethical guidelines and standards, prioritising the wellbeing and confidentiality of the young people I work with above all else.

My Experience

Having spent over ten years in the education and the youth development field, I bring a significant amount of experience and passion to my work with children and young people.

My journey to working with children and young people began in 2014 when I volunteered at Manchester Young Lives, an alternative provision. During my time there, I gained valuable insights into supporting and nurturing young individuals facing various challenges.

In 2015, I volunteered for a charity called Reclaim, a Manchester-based leadership and mentoring project. I had the privilege of working as a mentor for two teenage girls. In my role as a mentor, I was providing support to the girls as they navigated various activities and challenges. Beyond the structured events, I made it my priority to assist them with anything they needed, ensuring they felt heard, understood, and empowered in their journey.

From Reclaim and Manchester Young Lives, I moved on to a specialised school for children with social, emotional, and mental health needs (SEMH) where I continue to work. During my ten years at this school, I have had the privilege of working closely with these students, many of whom have diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD and other neurodevelopmental conditions, as well as those who have experienced significant trauma. I provide guidance, academic and emotional support, and a supportive environment to help them thrive despite their individual challenges.

In 2024, I began volunteering as a counsellor with Place2Be, the UK's leading children's mental health charity. I provided one-to-one therapy sessions for children as young as 8 who were experiencing challenges such as anxiety, emotional distress, as well as school and home-related issues. During our sessions, I invited the children to use the creative tools available in the room, fostering an open dialogue that helped them feel safe and comfortable. I allowed the child to take the lead in what they wished to explore, enabling them to express themselves freely. By adopting a non-judgmental approach and showing empathy, I aimed to step into the child's world and truly understand their perspective. Together, we explored their thoughts and feelings, focusing on building resilience and trust within a supportive environment.

As a woman of colour, I understand that culturally diverse clients may feel hesitant to seek therapy, perhaps due to fear of judgment or stigma. In my room, the clients I work with are safe to share whatever is on their mind—without judgment. In our work together, you set the pace and I’ll meet you where you are, respecting your lived experience and helping you explore what matters most to you at a pace that feels right. Your feelings and experiences are valid, and you’ll be supported to express them openly.

Ongoing Learning & Professional Development

Continuous professional development is at the core of my practice. I am currently undertaking a Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People, which is enhancing my understanding of therapeutic techniques specifically tailored for younger clients. I am dedicated to enhancing my skills and knowledge through regular supervision and a variety of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses throughout the year. By staying informed of the latest research and therapeutic approaches, I ensure that I provide the highest standard of care for the children and young people I work with.

Regular supervision plays a vital role in my practice, allowing me to discuss my work with a qualified counsellor and supervisor. This process is essential for maintaining safe and ethical practices, ensuring that I continually reflect on my methods and the wellbeing of my clients. I am committed to upholding the confidentiality of all my clients, and their names and personal information will always remain private.

I am deeply passionate about supporting children and young people's mental health, having witnessed the profound impact of various challenges during my time as a teaching assistant working with children with SEMH needs. These challenges—including parental separation, domestic abuse, grief, trauma, and other adversities—often manifest in difficulties with emotional regulation. These issues can impede a child's ability to trust adults and peers, build resilience, form strong relationships, engage socially, and achieve academic success.

Throughout my role as a teaching assistant, I have come to understand the critical importance of early intervention for many children and young people. Addressing issues at an early stage can help prevent further negative outcomes and provide them with the support necessary to thrive both academically and emotionally.
