As an integrative counsellor grounded in person-centred therapy, I focus on empowering children and young people to take the lead in their therapeutic sessions. This approach allows them to choose what they wish to explore and share, fostering a sense of independence. I provide a listening ear and assist them in navigating emotional challenges, creating a safe, non-judgemental environment where they feel heard and supported. This collaborative process enables individuals to work through their issues and reach their full potential.
I believe that therapy sessions for children and young people should be enjoyable while also addressing serious issues. The therapeutic journey should not be a traumatic experience; rather, it should be a supportive space where they can work through their feelings, thoughts, and challenges.
Recognising that creative expression is an important means of communication and healing, I incorporate various tools such as clay, sand tray and art. These mediums allow children to explore their inner worlds and express their thoughts and feelings comfortably. While many children, especially teenagers, find these creative outlets helpful for opening up, I also understand that some may prefer a more conversational approach. Together, we will discover what works best for each individual, ensuring that their therapeutic journey is tailored to their unique needs.
Although our sessions may resemble "play" therapy, they are thoughtfully structured to promote emotional growth and resilience. I strive to create an atmosphere filled with empathy, understanding, and acceptance, enabling children and young people to process their experiences, develop coping strategies, and enhance their self-awareness.
My person-centred approach means I walk alongside each child or young person as they navigate their current challenges, respecting their voice and encouraging their personal growth.
